Nearly a century later, newly digitized letters shed light on Mallory’s hopes and fears about ascending Everest, leading up to the last days before he disappeared while heading for its peak. Mallory’s words, however, are now available to read online in their entirety for the first time. The college will display a selection of Mallory’s letters and possessions in the exhibit “George Mallory: Magdalene to the Mountain,” opening June 20. APThe Everest letters outline Mallory’s meticulous preparations and equipment tests, and his optimism about their prospects. CNN —The stars were out in force to watch Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami against LA Galaxy in Sunday’s 1-1 draw – and the Argentine, unsurprisingly, didn’t disappoint. LA Galaxy, once a home for some of Major League Soccer’s superstar signings following David Beckham’s arrival in 2007, took the lead in the 75th minute through Serbian striker Dejan Joveljić. Despite its new star-studded lineup, which now also features Luis Saurez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami was thoroughly outplayed for much of the match and looked to be heading for defeat until Messi’s intervention in the 92nd minute. Former Galaxy star Beckham, who has a statue outside of the the club’s stadium and is now a part-owner of Inter Miami, didn’t celebrate the equalizing goal against his former team. Actors Edward Norton and Liv Tyler watched alongside David Beckham and son Brooklyn Beckham.

CNN —No athlete attracts an A-list crowd quite like Lionel Messi, as demonstrated by Sunday’s Major League Soccer game between Inter Miami and Los Angeles FC. Ticket demand for Miami games has soared since the Argentinian’s arrival, with the average prices around $690 for Sunday’s match – the most expensive MLS game ever, according to online marketplace TickPick. Since moving from Paris Saint-Germain, Messi is having a huge impact on the pitch, as well as off it. Messi spoke with actor Owen Wilson after the game between LAFC and Inter Miami. ‘Asteroid City’ Review: Our Town and Country
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“Asteroid City,” the latest from Wes Anderson, is filled with the assiduous visuals, mythic faces and charming curiosities that you expect from this singular filmmaker. It’s partly set in 1955 in a fictional Southwest town, a lonely four corners with a diner, gas station and motor inn. Palm trees and cactuses stipple the town, and reddish buttes rise in the distance. It opens in black-and-white on an unnamed television host (Bryan Cranston, severe and mustachioed) in a studio. It looks like a film, a meticulous, detailed, visually balanced wide-screen Wes Anderson one.

The Cannes Film Festival
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( Melissa Kirsch | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The Cannes Film Festival began this week with Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, and ends on May 27 with a new Pixar film, “Elemental.” In between, there will be many screenings, many awkward standing ovations, many awards bestowed. Wes Anderson also has a new one, “Asteroid City,” about a junior stargazing convention. It features many members of the Andersonian repertory — Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody and others. In “Firebrand,” from the Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Alicia Vikander plays Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law. Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in 2018, has a new film, “Monster.” It stars Sakura Ando from “Shoplifters,” and the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who died last month, did the score.

GoodLeap is the largest financier of residential solar loans in the US, with 28% of the market. The former NFL tight end and Pro Football Hall of Famer told Insider he often reflected on whether, in life's final moments, he'd be proud of his choices. Gonzalez, who's also invested in plant-based-food companies like Beyond Meat, told Insider the climate crisis was the most important issue of his — and his children's — lifetime. GoodLeap is the top provider of residential solar loans, with a 28% share of the market. "Part of my work has always been making sure folks who typically are unconsidered are considered," DeBerry told Insider.
"Glass Onion" director Rian Johnson joked that Netflix might have funded the Twitter takeover. Johnson said this wasn't intentional, saying the character reflected general tech billionaire foibles. I hope there isn't some secret marketing department at Netflix that's funding this Twitter takeover," Johnson said. Johnson told Wired that Norton's character was originally based on an amalgamation of tech billionaire personalities. Asked if he would ever write a sequel about the downfall of Twitter, Johnson responded: "Didn't I just do that?"
Just in time for the streaming debut of its hotly anticipated "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," the streaming service's marketing team has listed the film's eponymous Greek island compound on the popular real estate site. "Sleek architecture and sophisticated design, with an equal eye toward nature and extravagance, provide an unparalleled luxury living experience accessible only by boat and crowned by a Glass Onion atrium," the listing reads. Of course, even if you have the millions to shell out, the "Glass Onion" estate doesn't exist. A link to "learn more" about the listing brings visitors to the "Glass Onion" page on Netflix's website. But viewers will be able bring the villa to their living rooms: "Glass Onion" hits Netflix on Dec. 23.

From left: Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline and Daniel Craig in ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,’ now in theaters. Streaming pioneer Netflix Inc. gave movie theaters something to be thankful for this year. The streaming platform’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” made $9.2 million between Friday and Sunday, or an average of $13,200 per screen, a higher per-screen performance than any other movie in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Still, the nattily attired Blanc is not only a detective dandy, he’s a dandy detective, and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is breezy holiday entertainment. All of them accept the offer to be guests at the lavish Greek island property of a jovial billionaire, Miles Bron ( Edward Norton ). We learn that he used to hang out with all of them at a tavern called the Glass Onion before he launched the tech business that made his fortune. Now he’s doing well enough to have built himself an enormous mansion topped by a palatial structure shaped like a glass onion. He boasts to his old friends that, unknown to his insurers, he has installed an override button that removes the protective glass housing around the masterpiece.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is a bit of a clunky title. But the film itself, which only ever calls itself “Glass Onion” on screen, is a delightful trifle of a mystery movie, a laugh-out-loud comedy that deserves to be a mass market theatrical hit. Perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. But perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. That being said, “Glass Onion” is as wonderfully enjoyable as its predecessor, even though there’s little need to connect the two.
REUTERS/Mario AnzuoniNov 23 (Reuters) - "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," a sequel to 2019's "Knives Out," brings together a new cast in Greece for a fresh murder mystery and case for sharply-dressed detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig. Rian Johnson, who directed both movies, helped peel back one of the franchise's biggest mysteries this week when he explained what "Glass Onion" means. He told Reuters, "Well it's a Beatles song first and foremost and it's kind of a Beatles song about a mystery that's not actually a mystery." He added: "I ended up working in the idea of the glass onion of this thing that seems densely layered but in reality, it's pretty transparent. "I can't think of a film that I've been in in quite a while where the costumes had such a presence in the film," Norton said.
CNN —Rising to the challenge of matching its successful predecessor, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” maintains the razor-sharp formula, with a setup that feels even more conspicuously like an Agatha Christie homage before an extremely clever series of twists kick in. Writer-director Rian Johnson again assembles a solid cast behind Daniel Craig, but it’s his use of language – where nary a word is wasted – that finally gives the sequel its edge. Netflix opportunistically stepped up to acquire the “Knives Out” franchise and, departing from its usual “Stroke the filmmakers’ egos” approach to theatrical distribution, will actually give the movie a wide one-week-only release before it hits the streaming service in late December. Happily, “Glass Onion” finds new layers to explore, in a way that makes the prospect of a new “Knives Out Mystery” every few years sound like a perfectly reasonable idea, wherever and however one chooses to consume it. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” premieres November 23 in US theaters and December 23 on Netflix.
CNN —The director of “Knives Out” is revealing the sexuality of Daniel Craig’s character in the hit film. Rian Johnson says super sleuth Benoit Blanc, a wacky detective, does have male lovers, Johnson confirmed at a BFI London Film Festival press conference. Johnson was discussing “Glass Onion,” the sequel to the 2019 mystery, which is set for a Netflix release Dec. 23. Dave J Hogan/Getty Images“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” also stars Edward Norton, Natasha Lyonne, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Dave Bautista. Hugh Grant, Yo-Yo Ma, the late Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim play themselves in the movie.
